Charles Barkley shreds NCAA for allowing betting: ‘S–t show’
Few things are more entertaining than Charles Barkley making his bets on the set of “Inside the NBA,” and it’s even more entertaining when he throws his signature guarantee on it.
But Sir Charles is pushing back against a potential rule change that would allow college athletes to wager on professional sports.
“When I heard that, I said, ‘This has got to be a joke,’” Barkley told reporters at Auburn’s Bruce, Barkley & Basketball Golf Classic event Monday afternoon.
“These are the people we have running college sports and we want to know why it’s a s–t show. Anybody who thinks that’s a good idea should have their head examined.”
The Division I Administrative Committee adopted a proposal last Wednesday that would lift the current restrictions in place that prohibit college athletes from any sports betting activity.
The measure still needs to be approved by Divisions II and III to take effect.

Barkley doubled down on his concerns about the proposal in a separate sit-down the following day, specifically about his worries that college players would not be able to stay within the boundaries of the new rules.
“You think some of these guys are not going to be betting on their own team or their own colleges?” Barkley said to an audience during a conversation with new Auburn head basketball coach Steven Pearl and Alabama head basketball coach Nate Oats.

To Barkley’s point, there have been a number of scandals across college sports that have swept up players, coaches and staff members who have improperly wagered on their own colleges or teams despite the current rules in place.
The issues haven’t been restricted to colleges, though, as several professional athletes have run afoul of the rules against sports betting in their respective sports.
Betting on College Basketball?
The most notable of the bunch is former NBA player Jontay Porter, who was banned for life by the NBA for influencing the outcome of bets and giving information to others bettors.
Despite the misgivings of many spectators, this rule change is likely to go into effect on Nov. 1 if all parties involved agree to the proposal by the end of the month.
If that happens, it won’t be the last time we hear Barkley rip the NCAA.
