Drew Allar out for rest of year as Penn State’s nightmare season gets even worse

The nightmare continues for Penn State.

Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar will miss the remainder of the college football season, head coach James Franklin announced Saturday after Penn State’s 22-21 loss to Northwestern at State College, Pa.

“Drew will be done for the year,” Franklin said.

Allar, a 21-year-old senior, suffered an apparent leg injury on a third-down play late in Saturday’s loss.

He limped off the field with help and was replaced by backup Ethan Grunkemeyer, who was stopped on Penn State’s fourth-down attempt on the next play.

Following the hit, Allar lay in pain while grabbing his left leg for a few moments before training staff helped him off.

After undergoing further evaluation on the sidelines, Allar was carted to the locker room.

It remains unclear what exactly is Allar’s injury, but because he is out of NCAA eligibility following this season, the injury ends his collegiate career.

Before his injury, Allar was 13-for-20 for 137 yards with a touchdown.

Wide receiver Devonte Ross, who transferred to Penn State last summer to play with Allar, was sullen afterward.

“I love Drew,” Ross said. “That’s unfortunate. It’s a tough situation just knowing him as a person and knowing how much football means to him, how much this team means to him, it’s tough but I know it’s next man up.”

The loss to Northwestern Saturday marks the third straight for Penn State, as they now hold a 3-3 record on the season.

“It’s 100 percent on me,” Franklin told reporters of the loss. “And we got to get it fixed. And I will get it fixed.”

In their past two weeks, the Nittany Lions lost to a winless UCLA squad and a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Oregon.

“Obviously, we didn’t handle last week’s loss well,” Franklin said following their 42-37 loss to the Bruins on Oct. 4. “We lost some players during that game, and then everything else. Travel, everything else.

“Did not come out with the right energy to start the game. Before you know it they got a touchdown drive and onside kick.”
