Zohran Mamdani refuses to credit Trump over Gaza cease-fire deal as other NY Dems offer tepid kudos
Mayoral front-runner Zohran Mamdani refused to credit President Trump for helping broker a long-awaited truce deal in Gaza – and instead bashed Israel – as other New York Democrats offered tepid kudos to the commander-in-chief Thursday.
While Dems across the state were “hopeful” about the agreement between Israel and Hamas that is expected to bring the rest of the living hostages home, they still got their licks in against Trump with one congressman even comparing the president to a “broken clock.”
When Mamdani was asked about the historic breakthrough, he accused Israel of committing “war crimes” and “genocide” against the Palestinian people.
“I’m hopeful at the news of a possible ceasefire. I hope that it is lasting. I hope that it brings peace,” he said on 1010 WINS — before unleashing the inflammatory message mostly aimed at Israel.
“And amidst that hope, a recognition that it does not erase the tragedy that has taken hold over these past two years,” he said. “A tragedy with Hamas’ horrific war crime on October 7th and the Israeli government’s horrific war crimes since then leading to the genocide of Palestinians.”
Mamdani’s campaign referred The Post to the radio interview when asked if the candidate believes the president deserves praise for the peace deal. The democratic socialist did not mention Trump during the 1010 WINS interview.
He faced blistering heat for his forceful criticism of Israel on the second-anniversary of Oct. 7 this week.
The cease-fire deal pushed by Trump includes a first phase, which involves the hostages being freed and Israeli forces pulling back from parts of the Palestinian territory.
The development led to cheers from Israelis and even Gazans for Trump, but liberals weren’t ready to shower praise on the Republican president.
“If the agreement succeeds in securing the release of the hostages, disarming Hamas, and ending the war, then of course the President deserves credit,” pro-Israel New York Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx) said.
“Even a broken clock like Donald Trump can be right twice a day.”
State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz said in a statement he couldn’t be more thrilled for the deal – and noted, “I only wished it could have happened sooner.”
“There’s very little good for which Trump can claim credit, only bad, but he certainly deserves some of the credit here,” Dinowitz (D-Bronx) told The Post.
Other lefty lawmakers in the Empire State were radio silent about Trump’s involvement, including the top two Dems in Congress.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was asked on CNN if Trump deserves credit, and he sidestepped the question.
“It’s a very positive step in the right direction,” he said of the impending truce.
US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Gov. Kathy Hochul and mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo all praised the deal, but left out Trump’s name in statements or remarks Thursday.
New York Republicans, in sharp contrast, lauded the 47th president.
“President Trump is a real dealmaker and leader and he’s not just negotiating an end to the Israel-Hamas war,” said Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) as she noted other peace he’s pushed around the globe.
Rep. Michael Lawler (R-Rockland/Westchester) thanked Trump “for leading this effort and working tirelessly to establish peace and bring the hostages home.”
Democratic state Assemblyman Kalman Yeger, of Brooklyn, appeared to be one of the few on the left on the same page as GOP members.
He said Trump deserves “much” credit for the deal.
“The resilience of the Israeli people, the relentless focus of Prime Minister Netanyahu and his strong allies in the Knesset,” Yeger told The Post, “and the tremendous backing of a US President who recognized that no nation can survive if it gets on its knees to terror, combined for an unbreakable force that brought about the Hamas surrender and the hopeful quick return of the hostages.”
