A woman believes her mother-in-law may have stolen one of her cherished vintage pieces — but she isn’t sure what to do about it.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that her mother-in-law stayed at their house one night back in June. Before her mother-in-law arrived, the poster moved her “beautiful vintage suede coat,” which was a gift from her own mother, around in her closet to conceal decorations that she knew her mother-in-law “didn’t like.”

“Fast forward to weather getting colder and I go to get the coat. Its not in my closet, its not on the floor. Or anywhwre else in the house,” she recalled. “I wouldn’t have packed it away, and besides i remember adjusting it to hide something and thinking i cant wait to wear it.”

So, she brought it up to her husband, explaining that she couldn’t “find it anywhere” and that his mom “had been the only person in our room.” He then “casually” mentioned to his mom that she was “very upset about not being able to find this coat after tearing the entire house apart.”

However, his mom seemed to brush it off.

“She says ‘well what does it look like? Coats dont just walk away she probably put it in a drawer somewhere’ and then got off the phone fast,” the woman wrote.

The woman is “almost 100%” sure that her mother-in-law took it and is “very angry and upset.” Now, she doesn’t want her mother-in-law in her home “ever again,” and “dreams at night about confronting her.”

“I don’t know what to do. The coat is very sentimental to me,” the woman added, asking Reddit if she was overreacting and looking for advice on how to handle the situation.

People in the comments section validated her feelings and encouraged her to stand firm.

“Go visit her and check her closet. Bring hubs with you and have him ask her directly if she took the coat. Then decide, but be sure you and your husband are on the same page, and he is the one to address his mother, not you,” one person commented.

“Assuming she did take it, what a scumbag! You’re absolutely right not to let her back into your home after this. You’d never be able to relax, and the trust is broken,” another person added.
