Glen Powell revealed that he auditioned for the role of Sam Evans on Glee — but it ultimately went to his close friend Chord Overstreet.
Powell, 36, spoke about the casting on a recent Therapuss podcast episode, explaining, “One of my best buddies in the world is Chord Overstreet. We both auditioned for Glee. We both auditioned for the same role.”
The Hit Man star explained that they had met in acting class and would be both “in the waiting room at the same time” during auditions because they “were buddies.”
And while it got down to the line, the role of Evans — who first appeared in season 2 of the hit Ryan Murphy series — went to Overstreet.

“And then we were down to the wire on Sam Evans, and he got it,” Powell said on the podcast, adding that the two later became roommates.
“He’s still one of my best friends,” Powell said. “We were about to be roommates. So we moved in together as he went on this crazy Glee ride, which was kind of wild… for one of your best friends in the world, to watch him go through that thing… it was crazy to be around.”
“It was the biggest show in the world,” he added. “I don’t think a lot of people remember that.”
Overstreet made his debut in the teen comedy-drama in 2010 when he was just 21. The now-36-year-old previously told PEOPLE that the role was something of a “boot camp” for him, but “in the best way.”
“I learned more than I could have ever learned from acting or singing classes,” he said in 2017.
“I couldn’t get that experience anywhere else,” he added. “I definitely became a better singer, from singing in the studio every day and watching people that are great performers that were coming onto our show.”
Glee ran for a total of six seasons between 2009 and 2015.
While Powell didn’t get the role, he has since taken Hollywood by storm, starring in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You, Twisters and his new Hulu series, Chad Powers.
