One man made a last-minute decision that changed his life significantly — but he wouldn’t let himself believe the good news until his mom confirmed it.

A 32-year-old Michigan man was at the Fleck’s Fresh Mart in Canton, Mich., when he decided to purchase a few 100X tickets “on whim,” he told Michigan Lottery officials.

One of those tickets contained the winning number for $2 million. “I was scratching off one of the tickets and when I saw I matched number 11 with ‘$2MIL’ underneath,” the winner said. “I kept asking myself: ‘What does this mean?’ because I didn’t believe I really won $2 million at first.”

He explained that he was so surprised, he had his mom look over the ticket and confirm he was the $2 million winner.

“I was so excited I didn’t know what to do with myself!” the player said. “Turning $20 into $2 million is unbelievable and still doesn’t feel real. I don’t think it’s going to fully sink in until I cash the check.”

He received his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $1.3 million at the Michigan Lottery headquarters. He told lottery officials that he plans to save his winnings.
