Sarah Michelle Gellar Hopes She ‘Burned’ This ’90s Red Carpet Look
NEED TO KNOW
- Sarah Michelle Gellar poked fun at her ’90s wardrobe in an Instagram post shared on Oct. 2
- The actress commented on her “improved” style as she compared her outfits then versus now
- In March, the Cruel Intentions star told PEOPLE that she’s “more invested” in finding what she loves to wear as she’s gotten older
Sarah Michelle Gellar is putting these outfits on the chopping block.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer star, 48, shared an Instagram post reflecting on her ’90s fashion. Let’s just say she’s glad she’s moved on from the past.
“I’m happy to say that my style has definitely improved,” the actress wrote with three side-by-side photos comparing her style then to today.
The ’90s looks that Gellar reflected on were worn to the 1997 Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer premieres and the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

Each of the outfits featured pre-naughts clothing and accessories, from tube dresses and beaded miniskirts to, yes, shiny hosiery, which Gellar joked is something she hopefully “burned.” She even went so far as to apologize for a feathered purse she brought along to watch I Know What You Did Last Summer for the first time 28 years ago.
Throwback fashion is often the topic of conversation for Gellar, whose starring roles in popular ’90s and 2000s films and shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cruel Intentions and Scooby-Doo) made her a red carpet fixture at the time.

In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE about her curation with eBay, Gellar dished on what trends she would and wouldn’t revive from the past.
“The one that’s coming back that I don’t totally get is the chokers, because I feel like chokers cut your neck off. That’s the one that I’m not totally behind,” she said.
She might be indifferent to bygone trends, but she gets why they always come back around, “whether it’s the clothing, the chokers, the Fendi [baguette], it’s the one time that we’re on the same page.”

More recently, Gellar spoke candidly about discovering her style as she’s gotten older.
“I think that there was a time when I worried so much about what was trendy and what people would think of how I looked in it, and I think now, I’m more invested in myself and wanting to try things that are different,” she said. “And I think it’s been successful for me lately.”

“I’ve been going outside of my comfort zones, which is rare, I think, at my age,” she continued. “But I don’t know, maybe there’s a confidence that comes with age?”
A part of that journey has been making her Paris Fashion Week debut, which she did at the Balenciaga show this past March. For the outing, she wore a daring little black dress teamed with a leather jacket and stilettos.
Gellar’s next movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, will hit theaters on April 10.
