Jessi Ngatikaura Shares How Ex and Harry Styles Inspired Her Hair Care Line

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Jessi Ngatikaura is opening up about the unlikely inspiration for the name of her hair line, JZ Styles, which shares a surname with one Harry Styles.

Speaking to PEOPLE in an exclusive interview at the destination retreat LadyWorld in Miramar Beach on Saturday, Sept. 27, 33-year-old Ngatikaura explains that she founded her company — which produces haircare products, hot tools, and extensions — while she was married to her ex-husband.

“At first it was [named for] me and my ex-husband because his name was Zach and I’m Jessi,” she said at the festival, which offered attendees a unique destination where they could experience their favorite creators, performers and personalities. “So when I was married to him is when I started JZ, so when we got divorced, I was like, ‘This sucks.’ So then I named my son Jagger Zayn, so now it’s [named] for him. So, we just changed the origin story.”

She continues: “And then Styles came from Harry Styles, because I was obsessed with him and I was like 21 [when I started the company.]”

Ngatikaura has been married to her current husband, Jordan Ngatikaura, since 2020. The two welcomed their first child together, son Jagger Zayn, on April 20, 2020.

On Jan. 13, 2023, Jessi and Jordan’s youngest child, daughter Jovi, arrived. She later explained in a 2024 TikTok video that they chose the names because she “liked the theme of old rock and roll — Bon Jovi, Mick Jagger. I just felt like they really went well together.”

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives follows Ngatikaura and her fellow MomTok cast members Taylor Frankie Paul, Mayci Neeley, Jen Affleck, Mikayla Matthews, Miranda McWhorter, Layla Taylor and Whitney Leavitt and their lives in Utah.

And while Ngatikaura has in recent years become well known for her hair (she actually trademarked the phrase “Utah curls”), she was rocking the look long before the show debuted.

“I’ve been the Utah curl queen — just not publicly,” she says. “I’ve been doing it for nine years.”

“It was crazy, when the show came out and it just popped off — the Utah hair, the extensions — I wasn’t expecting that because it wasn’t part of the storyline, just something people picked up on,” Ngatikaura adds. “But it’s my normal vibe and what I do all the time.”

In addition to her line JZ Styles, Ngatikaura also owns a salon and a hair school in Utah, and frequently travels to events to teach stylists how to use her products.

She also often does the hair of her castmates, telling PEOPLE that members of her JZ team do “all the interview hair for Secret Lives — for the confessionals.”
