- Keith Urban was used to Nicole Kidman being “supportive of his career,” a source tells PEOPLE
- The insider adds, however, that the country singer was not “as supportive as [Kidman] hoped” when she took on more projects
- The estranged couple share daughters Sunday and Faith, now 17 and 14
In the end, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman had different perspectives when it came to supporting each other’s careers, a source tells PEOPLE.
The couple wed in 2006, and when their two daughters Sunday and Faith, now 17 and 14, were younger, Kidman “was all about them.” Eventually, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress-producer went back to work in full force.
A source close to the family says Kidman “truly thrived working again. She’s been feeling amazing and very happy about having a career again.”
“Now when they are older, [Sunday and Faith] love seeing their mom work. They are very supportive of their mom,” says the source. For country singer Urban, however, “it’s been the opposite,” the source adds.
Says the source, “Keith was used to her being supportive of his career. He’s not been as supportive as she hoped.”
Reps for Urban and Kidman have not responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Kidman wrapped filming Practical Magic 2 with Sandra Bullock just weeks before her split news. She has four other upcoming TV shows in the works, plus a return to season 3 of Big Little Lies that was recently announced. Urban has been on his High and Alive World Tour this year, with more dates scheduled through August 2026.
On Tuesday, Sept. 30, Kidman officially filed for divorce from Urban in Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences.
“She didn’t want this,” a source told PEOPLE on Monday when news of their separation broke. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
In an interview with CBS News in December 2024, Kidman said after welcoming daughter Sunday with Urban, she thought, “I’m pretty much done now” with acting. Her mom, who died in September 2024, gave her advice that changed her mind.

“We were living on a farm,” recalled Kidman, “and that’s when my mother said, ‘I wouldn’t give up completely. Keep a finger sort of in it.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no. I’m done now. I’m done.’ She’s going, ‘Just listen to me. Keep moving forward. Not saying that you have to do it to the level you’ve been doing it, but I wouldn’t give it up completely.’ ”
The estranged couple previously spoke about juggling their busy schedules and family life.
Kidman, in April 2024, told PEOPLE about her “lovely” support system, saying at the time, “I’m so lucky that I have Keith, who’s just my love, my deep, deep love. That gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back to.”
She told Harper’s Bazaar in 2018 that she and Urban had “pretty strict with the boundaries on what we allow in terms of work into our home,” explaining at the time: “Obviously I work hard, but when I’m off, I’m off. Keith and I are very good at immediately clicking off because we have a really good life in Nashville that’s very simple, quiet and nourishing because we’ve made it like that.”
