The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) confirmed the numbers and gave details of the rescue efforts in a statement on Instagram on Wednesday, Oct. 1, translated from the original Indonesian.

The Al Khoziny boarding school collapsed as construction work was taking place at the site on Monday, Sept. 29, the BBC and Reuters reported. A police spokesperson told Sky News that building works were “unauthorized.”

As of Wednesday, Oct 1, rescue teams have located at least six children alive in the rubble, CNN reported. The teams made “tunnel-like passages or culverts to save the survivors,” Laksita Rini, Head of Fire and Rescue Department in Surabaya, told the outlet.

The BNPB is providing full emergency support in the search and rescue operation. The organization is being assisted by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), local police and volunteers to locate those missing, their statement noted.

A total of 102 people were evacuated from the collapsed building on Monday, Indonesia’s national newspaper Kompas initially reported. Around 100 people were injured in the collapse, with NBC News reporting head injuries and broken bones.

The foundations of the two-storey building were too weak to withstand the construction of the planned two additional floors, the BBC previously reported.
