Video footage taken at a Los Angeles area high school’s “Family Fun Day” captured the terrifying moment a carnival ride malfunctioned with several riders trapped inside.

The incident occurred on Friday, Sept. 26, at Bishop Conaty — Our Lady of Loretto High School in the Pico-Union neighborhood of L.A., according to ABC 7

In a video captured by eyewitness Sylvester Ramirez, the ride — most commonly known as the Zipper — appears to stop and jolt unexpectedly. Then, one of the carriages snaps out of place and rams into another.

In a second video, a red detached carriage can be seen returning to the loading area, but as it returned around the bend, the carriage gathered enough momentum to slam into another carriage. While the ride continued turning, the red carriage ran into the metal queue dividers placed next to the attraction.

“It didn’t feel real at all,” Ramirez told ABC 7. “It looked fine to me and then out of nowhere, boom, it hit the other one and went straight to the ground.”

“One of our friend’s brothers [was] in that,” fellow witness Alexia Murillo said.

Witnesses told the outlet some riders were trapped in the attraction for more than an hour before firefighters arrived on the scene. Luckily, no injuries have been reported.

The Los Angeles Fire Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In a statement shared to ABC 7 from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which operates the Catholic school system in the area, the group said the carnival ride was “operated by a third party.”

“We are very thankful to the first responders who arrived to help,” they continued. “The event was able to proceed as scheduled. The safety and well-being of all in our parishes, schools and ministries remain our top priority.”

On Sept. 30, ABC 7 reported the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health’s (Cal/OSHA) Amusement Ride and Tramway Unit is investigating the incident.

A representative for California’s Department of Industrial Relations, which oversees Cal/OSHA, did not provide a comment in time after PEOPLE’s request. Nor did they provide the name of the carnival ride operator.
