Jesse McCartney is leavin’ — for tour!
The singer is hitting the road on his new Weightless Tour starting Tuesday, Sept. 30 — and tells PEOPLE that fans are in for an exciting setlist that features beloved songs both old and new.
“I try to do a set that’s always well-rounded and has a lot of old material for the fans, some of the old nostalgia, and then mix it in with some of the new stuff,” he says “It’s a nice balance. A little bit for them, a little bit for me.”
Though he’s known for classic 2000s hits like “Beautiful Soul,” McCartney, 38, has plenty of new to work with, as he released his latest EP Weightless earlier this month. For the four-song release, he teamed with Matt and James Morales, with whom he previously worked on his 2014 album In Technicolor.
Still, he’s covering new ground, especially in his new single “Dulce,” which features a sexy Latin flair.
“They’re both of Latin descent and they have an amazing group of songwriters that are familiar with that genre,” McCartney says. “They were playing me some drum patterns that I was like, ‘I don’t know, that feels really far left for me, but if you guys say it’s okay, I guess we’ll give it a shot.’ Then I just fell in love with that sound.”
The star even teases that he’s hoping to get a female Latin pop artist for a feature on “Dulce.”
“I think it’s fun to switch things up and do things that are different and keep the fans on their toes. I just love that genre and that style of music,” he says. “It’s like, you can’t not dance when you hear it.”

McCartney says he’s gearing up to play nearly two hours each night on tour, which begins in Washington, D.C., and stretches through Nov. 15, with stops in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.
“I can’t believe it’s here. It’s crazy. It’s very exciting. We toured last fall, so I’ve got the same crew, same band, and they’re all pros, so I’m very confident,” he says. “It’s a very high-energy show. We put a lot of resources into the production value and lighting and video screens and all the fun stuff that make it look like a great pop show.”
Though McCartney — who released his debut album Beautiful Soul in 2004 — is no stranger to the touring life, this go-round will be a bit different for the star, as it’s his first time heading out on the road since welcoming his son Archer James with wife Katie in May.

Archer caught his first concert in August, when McCartney joined the Jonas Brothers in a surprise appearance during the trio’s JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown Tour stop in New Jersey.
“It’s like a daycare center backstage at a Jonas Brothers concert, let me tell you,” he jokes, as all three Jonas Brothers are now dads too. “It’s not the same tour as when we were in our early 20s, it’s a different vibe now. But it’s amazing. [I’m] so happy for them.”
The performance was something of a reunion for the pop stars, as the Jonas Brothers opened for McCartney early in both of their careers.
“They were my first opening act and I think it was their first tour before they exploded onto the scene, so this was a really cool, nostalgic moment not just for the fans, but for us,” he says. “And they’re just the greatest guys on the planet, and you know why they’re this successful so many years later, ‘cause they just have big hearts.”
