Keith Urban’s Been ‘Going Through Some Stuff’ amid Nicole Kidman Split: Sources (Exclusive)

Keith Urban was dealing with some things behind the scenes prior to his divorce from Nicole Kidman, according to multiple sources.

A source in Urban’s circle tells PEOPLE that the country star — whose wife Nicole Kidman filed for divorce after 19 years of marriage — has “just been going through some stuff” as of late.

“He has been making questionable choices for some time now and this was not the case of them just drifting apart,” adds a Kidman source.

Reps for Kidman and Urban did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Urban, 57, and Kidman, 58, separated early this summer, and PEOPLE confirmed news of their split on Sept. 29. The next day, the Babygirl actress filed for divorce, though a third source says their break-up was a long time coming, at least according to the “Blue Ain’t Your Color” singer’s inner circle.

“For those around him this has felt more like a gradual drift than some big shocking break,” the source says.

Urban launched his High and Alive Tour in May, and has been playing through the summer. His next show is scheduled for Oct. 2 in Hershey, Penn.

A source previously told PEOPLE in August that Kidman, meanwhile, has spent the summer with the pair’s daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

“While Keith has been away on tour all summer, Nicole and her daughters have been inseparable, spending time together bonding,” the source said. “Now the focus is back to school in Nashville, where Nic has been getting the girls ready for the new year.”

The pair was last seen in public together at an event in Nashville in June, and Kidman celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary with an Instagram post on June 25.

Both stars have spoken glowingly of the other for years in public, and in 2019, Kidman told PEOPLE about the moment she knew that she and Urban were meant to be together.

“It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York. That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry,’” she recalled. “It was pretty intense. I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”
