John Waters is returning to his filmography in a new format.

The director, actor and author will narrate a series of his celebrated screenplays, compiled in The John Waters Screenplay Collection, due out later this year from Macmillan Audio, PEOPLE can exclusively announce.

The audiobooks collect the scripts for some of Water’s most beloved movies, including Multiple Maniacs (1970), Pink Flamingos (1972), Female Trouble (1974), Desperate Living (1977), Hairspray (1988) and the un-produced movie Flamingoes Forever. Waters is set to narrate each film and character himself.

“Finally I get the opportunity no other film director would want; to go over the top of ‘line readings’, beyond multiple-motion-picture-disorder into a new dimension of celluloid insanity, and perform every single role in my movies out loud for your twisted enjoyment,” the author, 79, says in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

“That’s right, from Divine right on down to the filthiest day player, I am now, for the first time, the entire cast of Multiple Maniacs! Pink Flamingos! Female Trouble! Desperate Living! Hairspray! Flamingos Forever!”

In addition to his filmmaking, Waters is an established author, known for memoirs like 2014’s Carsick and 2019’s Mr. Know-It-All (both audiobook narrations earned Waters a Grammy nomination), along with the 2022 novel Liarmouth. He has also led spoken-word performances of his work, including This Filthy World and A John Waters Christmas.

His upcoming screenplay collection, however, promises to be a “delightfully trashy, wonderfully frenetic and audaciously edgy” experience, per its publisher.

“Aural anarchy or cinematic schizophrenia?” Waters asks. “You be the judge. Go ahead, play it. You won’t believe your ears.”
