Massachusetts Man, 28, Dies While Moving Plywood in ‘Tragic‘ Workplace Incident

A 28-year-old Massachusetts man has died following a workplace incident at a millwork studio.

David Morais of West Roxbury was moving a stack of plywood at Materia Millwork in Avon on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at approximately 2:56 p.m. local time when the incident occurred, according to press releases issued by the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office and the Avon Police Department (Avon PD).

First responders from the Avon PD and the Avon Fire Department responded to a report of a “fatal industrial accident,” per a press release from the fire department. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities “discovered an adult male inside the business suffering from fatal injuries.”

“He was pronounced dead at the scene,” they added.

The Massachusetts State Police, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner were called to the scene to investigate, per the statement. 

PEOPLE reached out to the Avon PD, the Avon Fire Department, the Massachusetts State PD and the state medical examiner’s office for comment on Friday, Sept. 26, but did not receive immediate responses.

In a statement shared on Instagram on Sept. 24, the Materia Millwork team said they were “heartbroken” over the “tragic accident.”

“David was more than a valued member of our team. He was a friend, a craftsman, and someone we were lucky to know. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

“The safety and well-being of our team will always be our top priority. Out of respect for the ongoing investigation, we’re unable to share further details right now,” the statement concluded.
