Jake Knapp’s Girlfriend Makena White Spoke About Health Issues Before Death

Makena White spoke about her health issues in various social media posts before her death at age 28.

White, the girlfriend of PGA golfer Jake Knapp, died earlier this week, her friend announced in a post on her Instagram page on Friday, Sept. 26. In the months ahead of her death, White shared multiple social media posts about her health.

In one X post shared in June, White posted a photo of US Open Golf Championship scores on her laptop while she was at work. “We’re dialled #GolfsLongestDay,” she wrote in the caption.

A follow-up post included a photo of her Apple Watch, which showed her heart rate elevated at 133. In the caption, White said she has tachycardia — a condition where the heart beats abnormally fast. “(By dialled I mean tachycardic) #GolfsLongestDay,” she wrote.

Another post, shared a month earlier in May, showed White wearing a holter monitor, a small device worn to record heart activity.

“The irony of being at a cardiac surgery conference (for my job) while wearing a holter monitor for your own heart defect is pretty funny,” she wrote with the image.

One other post that was shared in April indicated that White had undergone one of what appeared to be many recent procedures.

“Holy s—. Just rose from 6h post anesthesia nap,” she wrote at the time on X.

White was remembered in her friend’s tribute as “one of a kind” and someone who “had this rare way of making you feel special,” as well as for having a “huge heart” that “was always overflowing with love.”

“To be loved by Makena was a gift; one that came with endless laughter, so much joy and a healthy sprinkling of chaos as we tried to keep up with her travel schedule,” the friend added, before encouraging others to make donations to Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund in honor of White.

Hours after White’s death was announced, Knapp broke his silence and remembered his girlfriend in a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE. “Makena was such a thoughtful person whose selflessness toward others is something I will always appreciate,” the athlete said. “We shared so many unforgettable memories together and now that she’s no longer with us, it’s a tough reality to comprehend.”

Knapp, who reportedly began dating White in August 2023, added: “She had an incredible family, great friends, and her fun, outgoing energy will be missed by all of us. It’s an understatement to say how hard all of this is to process for everyone who knew Mak, especially her family and friends, who deserve privacy and respect during this difficult time.”
