Terry Crews is ensuring fitness remains his top priority.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, Crews, 57, attended the America’s Got Talent season 20 finale red carpet at Hotel Dena in Pasadena, Calif., where he spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about how he maintains a healthy lifestyle despite his demanding work schedule.

The AGT host says workouts are the one thing that he “never” misses, regardless of how busy he gets.

“See, a lot of people would feel like, ‘Oh, well, he’s got a lot to do today, he probably missed a workout.’ I never miss,” Crews tells PEOPLE.

The Brooklyn 99 alum says he starts his day with exercise, and it’s not just taking photos for accountability that keeps him committed to working out.

“That’s why I [take] my workout photos in the morning just to show people, hey, it’s still here, because it’s training,” Crews says. “You know what I mean? One thing that people forget is discipline.”

He continues, “But discipline is not punishment. It’s training. So you have to train yourself to be able to do this stuff, to stay up, to be energetic, to keep going.”

“And I want to be doing this for the rest of my life, so I’m always, always preparing,” he adds.

Crews describes training as a “fun” part of his routine that helps to prepare him for the day ahead.

“It’s fun, but I love what I do,” he says. “And you’ve got to be prepared. You know what I mean? I respect the talent too much to come here unprepared. It’s out of respect to everyone who has given so much.”

Alongside the demands of work, Crews shares five children — Naomi, 36, Azriél, 35, Tera, 26, Winnie, 22, and Isiah, 20 — with his wife of 36 years, Rebecca King-Crews.

He previously revealed that he’s extremely “tired” after a day of filming AGT as he can burn up to 7,000 calories working on one episode.

To make it through the day, “you have to be in shape. That’s one thing, I have to condition myself,” Crews said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August. “Literally, I wake up. I prepare. I’m doing my whole thing.”

“It’s the hardest, most satisfying, most wonderful show and job in the world,” he added, speaking of AGT.
