Frankie Grande is getting candid about “growing up glittery in a grayscale world” — and how he learned to harness the power of being different.
In his new memoir Supergay!, Grande — actor, singer and brother of Ariana Grande — opens up about growing up lonely and with big questions about his identity, addiction, abandonment and belonging. The memoir traces Grande’s journey to “stop hiding, start healing and fully embrace the power of being too much.”

Grande’s memoir begins in childhood — a lonely moment for him, because he “always knew he was different,” per the memoir’s synopsis. So he found comfort in vibrant superhero stories that reflected the way he felt.
Supergay! tells Grande’s own epic story, his heartbreaks and hard moments made into character arcs for a “campy, chaotic, deeply human hero’s journey.”

“Because in a world that wants you to tone it down, the bravest thing you can do is turn the volume all the way up,” the synopsis concludes.
The memoir also pays homage to the superhero genre with comic book-esque illustrations inside. Grande himself poses on the cover of Supergay! — which PEOPLE can exclusively reveal — clad in a red cape with a glittery superhero crest on his chest.
Grande tells PEOPLE he wants queer people everywhere to know that “being gay is definitely a superpower.”
“This book is everything that young Frankie — scared, lonely, self-doubting — needed so badly to see in the world,” Grande tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “I hope it helps people everywhere see how their own origin stories gave them superpowers. Because all of us have superpowers.”
