Julia Garner Channels Madonna in New Photos After Saying Biopic Is ‘Supposed to Still Happen’
NEED TO KNOW
- Julia Garner’s latest photoshoot evoked Madonna, whom she has been attached to play in a biopic since 2022
- Garner recently said the project is “supposed to still happen”
- In her interview with CR Fashion Book, Garner also reflected on the successful year she’s had and what art means to her
Julia Garner is more than ready for the cameras to roll on the Madonna biopic.
The Weapons star, 31, posed in outfits that evoked some of Madonna’s most iconic ’80s looks in a new photoshoot for CR Fashion Book, published on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Garner’s blonde hair was styled by Bobby Eliot and her makeup by Misha Shahzada to evoke mid-century Hollywood glamour. However, it was impossible not to see the resemblance to Madonna, who also often referenced Golden Age Hollywood. Garner’s blonde hair was reminiscent of the cover of her 1986 album True Blue.
In one shot, Garner wore a pink Gucci dress and posed in front of a bright red background. If she had worn gloves, she might have looked just like Marilyn Monroe performing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Madonna also referenced Monroe’s look in the “Material Girl” video.

Garner didn’t mention the long-gestating Madonna biopic she’s been associated with in her CR Fashion Book interview, but she did reflect on the impressive year she’s had. This summer, she starred as the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps and gave an acclaimed performance in the horror movie Weapons. She also starred in Wolf Man, which opened in January.
“I mean, it’s crazy. I am in disbelief,” she said of the response to her summer hits. “For me, at least, you make these films, and you’re in your own world and bubble with these people. I’m putting care and attention [into it] knowing that people are going to see it, but I always forget that a mass amount of people are going to see it. That feeling is super important.”

The Ozark star also took a moment to reflect on the power of movies and art as a whole.
“You sometimes watch things and you’re like, ‘Wow, they’ve captured a moment.’ Like, for that actor, it was real,” Garner said. “They got it on film, they captured it. The editor and the director were smart enough to take that cut and put it in the film for people to feel less alone. That’s what I love about movies. It’s a room, and it’s art, and it’s storytelling. It’s just a reminder, especially in this day and age, that art brings people together. Politics separate people.”

Garner has been linked to a film about Madonna since at least 2022. That same year, a source told PEOPLE that she was Madonna’s top pick to play her in a movie. However, in January 2023, Variety reported that Universal Pictures was no longer developing the project.
While the movie was stalled, Garner and Madonna remained in each others orbit, with the two posing for a picture at photographer and filmmaker Steven Klein’s May 2023 birthday party. In December 2023, the Inventing Anna star joined Madonna onstage during a Brooklyn tour stop. In July 2024, Madonna teased the script, which carried the working title Who’s That Girl, a reference to her 1987 film and the hit title song.
In July, Garner told SmartLess podcast hosts Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman that the film is “supposed to still happen.”

Garner’s next project is The Altruists, a new Netflix series based on the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. Garner plays his business partner, Caroline Ellison.
