The British royal family is known for being prim and proper, but Princess Anne championed garment manufacturing in the U.K. at an unexpected place: a lingerie workshop!
On Sept. 15, the Princess Royal visited luxury underwear brand Edge o’ Beyond’s workshop in Caerphilly, South Wales, in her long-term role as president of the U.K. Fashion and Textile Association.
Anne, 75, unveiled a plaque on one of the brand’s underwear displays, making for a surprising royal photo op.
Edge o’ Beyond’s founder, Naomi De Haan, told The Telegraph that Princess Anne was “very cool, very interested in everything,” adding that she “came across as very feminist.”

Employees showed Princess Anne how they create their jewelry-adorned lingerie as she toured their studio, allowing her to speak with the machinists. She learned of the challenges they face when trying to ensure the wires in their bras for larger sizes are strong enough, according to The Telegraph.
Princess Anne was also seen in discussions about making corsets without the use of whalebone and the issues surrounding “censorship of the female body,” which can make promoting lingerie products on social media difficult, the outlet reported.
Following the royal’s visit, De Haan revealed in an Instagram post that it coincided with Edge O’ Beyond’s 11th anniversary. She gushed that they were “so proud” to host Princess Anne while celebrating their efforts towards “reviving garment manufacturing in the U.K.”
“Her Royal Highness’s deep understanding of the fashion + textile industry + her genuine curiosity were inspiring for our whole team,” De Hann captioned the Sept. 15 Instagram post.

“This visit is recognition of the exceptional skills of our technicians, + a celebration of keeping British lingerie craftsmanship alive,” she added.
