Travel Chaos After ‘Unidentified Drones’ Close 2 Busy Airports
NEED TO KNOW
- Thousands of travelers were impacted after drones were spotted in the airspace of two Scandinavian airports
- The sightings of “2-3…large…unidentified drones” on Monday, Sept. 22, closed Denmark’s Copenhagen Airport and Norway’s Oslo Airport
- The Danish police said that the drones were likely flown by a “capable operator”
Two busy Scandinavian airports were forced to close due to a reported drone sighting, local police have confirmed.
On Monday, Sept. 22, Denmark’s Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and Norway’s Oslo Airport (OSL) were closed for several hours after unidentified drones were spotted in the areas, the Copenhagen Police said in a statement on X.
“CPH Airport is currently closed for takeoff and landing, as 2-3 large drones have been seen flying in the area. The time horizon is currently unknown,” said police, adding in an updated post, “The police are still present around the airport as drones have been observed.”
CPH stopped flights for nearly four hours after the sighting on Monday night.
“There are still unidentified drones around Copenhagen Airport. As a result, no flights can take off or land,” CHP wrote on X Monday. “Arriving flights have been diverted to other airports and departing flights have been delayed or cancelled.”

The Danish police said that the drones were likely flown by a “capable operator,” though they could not identify the type of drones spotted, CNN reported.
“The drones came from several different directions, turning their lights on and off, before eventually disappearing after several hours,” Danish police Chief Superintendent Jens Jespersen said in a press conference, per the outlet.
“It’s an actor who has the capabilities, the will and the tools to show off in this way,” he added. No suspects have been identified at this time.
A separate drone sighting at Oslo airport led to the airport shutting down for three hours on Monday, according to CNN. “Incoming flights are now being redirected to the nearest airport,” Communication Manager Monica Iren Fasting told the outlet.
CPH resumed flights at 12:30 a.m. local time, while OSL reopened at around 3:22 a.m. local time, the BBC and Reuters reported.

CPH wrote in an update on X on Tuesday, Sept. 23, “Copenhagen Airport is reopening after being closed due to drone. However, there will be delays and cancellations. Passengers are asked to check with their airline.”
“Due to the lockdown last night, there are unfortunately delays and cancelled flights to and from CPH during the day,” the airport added.
According to the BBC, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reportedly referenced in a social media post “Russia’s violation” of Copenhagen’s airspace on Monday. Police have not commented on this.
The incident is being investigated by the police.
