American Horror Story is an anthology series that tells a different story each season, though some are connected through characters who appear multiple times or through plots that intertwine.
Paulson first appeared in the show’s inaugural season, subtitled Murder House, as medium Billie Dean Howard. (She would later go on to reprise that specific role multiple times throughout the series.)

The first eight seasons of American Horror Story featured Paulson — sometimes playing multiple roles at once. She skipped season 9, returned for season 10, and Paulson was then absent from the following and latest two seasons.
Back in June, American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy teased Paulson’s involvement in the series’ spooky season 13, writing in the comments section of a now-deleted Instagram post: “Sarah Paulson and I are cooking up something cool!”

According to Paulson, “the largest gift” of getting to be a part of American Horror Story is that she “got to play so many different characters.”
“It meant audiences largely didn’t get attached to any type of character I played, which meant I have a lot more freedom and elasticity, in terms of what people will accept from me,” she told PEOPLE.
Added Paulson, “I haven’t sort of got myself pigeonholed into one thing, which is, as an actor, is the greatest gift you could ever get.”
American Horror Story is available to stream on FX.
