Matthew McConaughey Reveals Secret to 13-Year Marriage with Wife Camila

Matthew McConaughey revealed his secret tip for a healthier marriage — and it involves getting cozy together.

Speaking with Fox News Digital, the actor, 55, who has been married to Camila Alves McConaughey for over a decade, said that couples with king-sized beds should consider downsizing.

“I wake up one morning … I’m looking over there, and Camila’s like a football field away, man. Then you go to bed at night, like, you want to snuggle up and … ‘Well, we’ve got to cover you up. Come about 12 feet, and I’ll come 12 feet,’ ” he explained.

The Poems & Prayers author added, “You’re like, man, this damn king-size bed is not good for the marriage, man. Get rid of that son of a b—-.”

“So we got a queen-size, where we’re shoulder to shoulder,” continued Matthew. “I’m telling you, it’s good for your marriage.”

The Oscar winner also emphasized the importance of prioritizing a romantic connection with a partner, even amid day-to-day parenting duties.

“You’ve got kids, so you don’t … you’re spending as much time being a good mother and father of them, but you also gotta make sure — and I can do a better job of this — of going, ‘No, this is our time,’ ” Matthew said.

“You can’t 100% live with the kids as a parent,” he continued. “You gotta make to remember that one of the best examples you can give the kids of how to treat a woman or a man or how to someone they end up falling in love with down the line is how you treat their mother and how the mother treats the father.”

Matthew met Camila — a model, entrepreneur and philanthropist — at a nightclub in L.A. in 2006. 

“She showed up, and she moved right to left in front of my eyes across that club,” the actor previously told PEOPLE of their first meeting. “It was as if she was floating. And I did not say, ‘Who is that?’ I said, ‘What is that?’ And then introduced myself.”

He added, “Since that evening, I have not wanted to spend time with any other woman. We have a love that we never question.”

The pair married in 2012 after a six-month engagement. They went on to welcome three children: Levi, 17, Vida, 15, and Livingston, 12.

The actor’s latest creative endeavor, Poems & Prayers, is an “inspiring, faith-filled and often hilarious” collection of prayers and poetry,” according to a synopsis shared with PEOPLE.
