The stars of Chief of War have their fingers crossed for a second season — even if it hasn’t been greenlit yet.
“I love playing this character so much,” Luciane Buchanan, who played queen consort Ka’ahumanu, told Deadline in September 2025. “So there’s definitely more to be explored, and I am crossing my fingers. But at this point, I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
The Apple TV+ historical drama, which premiered in August 2025, follows the real events that led to the unification of the Hawaiian islands in the late 1700s, amid threats of colonization. Jason Momoa co-created the series with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett and starred as Kaʻiana, a warrior and the first leader to leave the islands.
“I feel like this whole thing has chosen me in a way, like this is my destiny,” the Hawaiian native told PEOPLE in July 2025. “I have no idea how I got to all this, but we’re here, and I’m very grateful. I’m living my dream doing what I love to do. To play my ancestors is such a responsibility. It’s scary and exciting.”

Will there be a Chief of War season 2?
Apple TV+
Apple TV+ hasn’t officially renewed Chief of War for a second season. However, the show’s producers told Hawaiian News Now in July 2025 that they will learn in September whether the streamer will greenlight the show for not only a second season, but also a third.
“We have a lot of fights to battle and to go through because it’s not our money making this, but you know, it’s a collaborative process,” Momoa told the outlet.
The Game of Thrones alum also revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the show was initially billed as a limited series. Five weeks before production began, however, he and Sibbett decided to plant seeds for future seasons — including the death of Kaʻiana’s brother, Nahi (Siua Ikaleʻo).
“We were like, ‘Man, we have to tell more. We have to open this [story] up,’ ” Momoa told the outlet in September 2025. “But when we changed the structure, we knew that Nahi was going to have to die.”
The actor noted that Nahi’s death was one of the times when he “veered away” from historical accuracy.
“Nahi didn’t die this way, but I knew for story [purposes], it was going to create the maximum amount of emotional impact that we need to carry us into the finale and then hopefully give us that draw for a season two,” Momoa said. “We needed the family to lose something significant.”

If the drama was approved for another season, the cast who survived the bloody battles will likely return to reprise their roles, including Momoa and Buchanan. The actress teased that audiences will want more after watching season 1.
“There’s so much to be explored,” The Night Agent actress told Deadline. “I think anyone who watched the show and has dug into the history will know that there are many, many more battles and betrayal and different things that happen in order for Kamehameha to unite these kingdoms.”
What has Jason Momoa said about Chief of War season 2?
Apple TV+
The actor has been very vocal about his hopes for a renewal — and feels “very positive” it will happen.
“The show’s doing really well with critics, with fans,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I get so many compliments about it, and I haven’t [heard] any really bad things.”
Momoa went on to say that he thinks Hawaiians and the executives at Apple are happy, which makes the future of Chief of War look promising.
“Listen, if people really resonate with it, there’s so many possibilities of what can happen,” he said. “Next season, if there is one, oh, it’s all [coming] out, because this story is f—— huge, dude.”
