The Fox and the Devil, out in spring 2026 from Del Rey, is a new supernatural romance from the bestselling author — and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look.
The novel follows Anneke, whose world is shaken when she finds her father Abraham — a doctor, scientist and vampire scholar — murdered, with a mysterious woman looming over him.
Abraham’s death, however, is just one of many across Europe. Anneke, determined they’re all connected, hires a team of detectives to help her catch the killer. She also keeps coming back to vital pieces of evidence: bloodsoaked letters each signed by “Diavola.”

But as Anneke uncovers more about Diavola’s identity, she comes to see that her intentions may be darker than she thought, and that she’s just as aware of Anneke too.
Kiersten White is known for stories with a darker edge, like Lucy Undying and Mister Magic. But The Fox and the Devil proved to be a new journey entirely, the author shares.
“Some books are fights, an endless wrestle with characters and narrative and structure,” White tells PEOPLE. “The Fox and the Devil was a dance. I’ve never had this much fun writing a novel.”

She also explains that a lot of that pleasure came from building the novel’s moody historical setting.

“From researching the historical elements — photography, forensic science, the 1900 Paris world fair — to writing menacing love letters scattered across a continent like bloody rose petals, following Anneke Van Helsing on her relentless pursuit of a murderer was the best time I’ve had in years,” White explains. “I hope it is for readers, too.”
White is also the author of the Camelot Rising, And I Darken and Paranormalcy series.
The Fox and the Devil will be published on March 10, 2026 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
