Jimmy Kimmel’s full controversial comments on Charlie Kirk that led to ABC pulling ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’
Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show was pulled from ABC “indefinitely” Wednesday after he made controversial comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
The late-night comic, 57, came under fire after he claimed the “MAGA gang” was trying to score political points off Kirk’s public and savage assassination.
What Kimmel said
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during his show’s Monday monologue.
“In between the finger-pointing, the White House flew the flag at half-staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level, you can see how hard the president was taking this.”
The show then cut to a clip of President Trump being questioned by a reporter outside the White House, where he was asked how he was holding up in the wake of Kirk’s assassination.
The commander-in-chief said, “I think very good,” then changed the subject to renovations being done to the White House ballroom, before cutting back to Kimmel.
“He’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction,” the late-night host quipped.
“This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish. Okay?”
Kimmel then doubled down, sharing that it wasn’t the first time since Kirk’s murder that he redirected a question about the Turning Point USA founder back to the White House ballroom.
The show then cut to a clip of Trump on “Fox & Friends” two days after Kirk’s death, explaining he was going over the renovations with the architects when he got the news, before cutting back to Kimmel.
“And then we installed the most beautiful chandelier,” Kimmel said, mocking the president.
‘Late Night’ blowback
Kimmel’s off-key, controversial comments led to significant backlash in the wake of Kirk’s murder after the conservative activist was shot dead on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Sept. 10.
In response to the outrage, ABC announced it was pulling the comedian’s late-night talk show off the air “indefinitely.”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson confirmed to The Post on Wednesday.
Nexstar Media Group, the major broadcast company that serves as a primary affiliate for ABC, confirmed that it would “preempt” Kimmel’s program in the wake of his remarks.
“The company’s owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ for the foreseeable future, beginning with tonight’s show,” Nexstar said in a press release.
“Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” it continued.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has been a staple for ABC since it began airing in 2004.
