The Broadway actor shares his son with his ex-wife, Jenny Lumet. Following his split from Lumet, Bobby met actress Rose Byrne through a mutual friend in 2012. Together, the two welcomed sons Rafael, 7, and Rocco, 9.

When speaking with PEOPLE exclusively at the opening for Art, the proud dad opened up about how his younger children feel about his acting career.

“Well, my guys are small. They’re 7 and 9, so they haven’t seen the show, but they know who I’m doing the show with, and of course, they’re huge fans of Neil’s because of A Series of Unfortunate Events,” he tells PEOPLE. “They love that show and they love James because of Peter Rabbit, because Rose made Peter Rabbit with James.”

“So anytime I FaceTime them from the theater, they’re always asking, ‘Where’s the guys? Where’s the guys?’ ” he adds. “And I have to run through the theater and look for the guys so they can say hello and it really is like a family.”

When it comes to raising kids who are relatively close in age to each other, the task hasn’t always been easy.

“Oh, man, it is what it is,” Byrne told MiNDFOOD in November 2018. “I’m always thinking I’m going to be on top of everything and I never am. I’m always completely overwhelmed. I have no business telling anyone how to do parenting. I’m totally learning on the job.”

Byrne and Cannavale — who have starred in several films together, including SpyAdult BeginnersAnnieInappropriate Behavior and Ezra — try to work on the same projects when possible to keep their kids nearby.

While discussing Ezra during a May 2024 appearance on Today, Cannavale said, “The nice thing about this is like we shot it here in New York and New Jersey, and the kids know where we are at all times when we’re working together, so that’s nice.”

“Our life is really just … aside from raising the kids, it’s just scheduling, everything is scheduling,” he continued. “And so we try our best to really stay together, we always say, ‘We’ve got to keep the band together,’ so we take the kids with us wherever we go and we try to work here as much as we can.”

Cannavale added that “whenever there is an opportunity to work together, we know that we’re gonna have the kids close by and it sort of all revolves around that.”
