Queen Camilla ushers Kate Middleton away from Melania Trump during state visit
An awkward moment between Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton was caught by cameras during their formal state visit welcome with First Lady Melania Trump.
The Princess of Wales, 43, was locked deep in conversation with President Donald Trump’s wife, 55, when the Queen, 77, appeared to instruct Middleton to move along, to which she obliged.
In the video taken on Wednesday, Sept. 17, after Trump and Melania were greeted by Prince William and Middleton on the grounds of Windsor Castle to begin their days-long visit to the UK.
Following the initial greeting, William and Middleton took the Trumps to meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla outside Victoria House.
The monarchs greeted Trump and Melania with kindness, as did their private secretaries, Sir Clive Alderton and Sophie Densham, before the conversations broke off.
President Trump began speaking to King Charles and Prince William while Camilla turned to Melania and started to chat.
Middleton then came over to her mother-in-law and started engaging in conversation with the first lady. Queen Camilla looked uncomfortable, awkwardly looking around as Middleton and Melania spoke.
A few short moments into their discussion, the Queen seemingly motioned Princess Kate to move along with a casual sweep of her hand.
Middleton got the message loud and clear.
She quickly wrapped up her conversation with Melania and walked back toward her husband’s side, leaving Queen Camilla to have a private discussion with the first lady as the group cleared a path for horse-drawn carriages to take them away to Windsor Castle.
This wasn’t the only bizarre interaction since the Trumps touched down in the UK.
Many claimed the president and his wife broke royal protocol when they failed to curtsy as they greeted the King and Queen; however, it appears that’s not the case.
“There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms,” according to the royal family’s official website.
“For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way,” it explained.
Trump also made headlines when he gushed over Middleton’s beauty when he arrived on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
“You’re beautiful, so beautiful,” Trump told the Princess of Wales, who wore a maroon-colored dress with a matching hat and purse for the ceremonial welcome.
Following the greeting from Charles and Camilla, the royal family treated President Trump and the first lady to a private luncheon before the US pair laid a wreath at the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II inside St. George’s Chapel.
A reported 200 military musicians gathered for the historic Beating Retreat ceremony, which symbolizes the lowering of ceremonial flags and closing of military camp gates at the end of every day. The ceremony dates back to the 17th century.
This marks the second time King Charles has hosted President Trump since becoming monarch in 2022.
