Robert Redford Allegedly ‘Dined in Sweats’ During Stay at Colorado Golf Club

With a decades-long career in Hollywood, Robert Redford certainly knew how to dress in style for the red carpet. However, he apparently enjoyed a more laidback aesthetic while dining out under the radar.
The Oscar-winning actor and director, best known for his roles in the likes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and his work on Ordinary People, died at the age of 89 on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
In the aftermath of his death, tributes have poured in from famous friends and former collaborators, including the likes of Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand.
A 2019 feature by The Tribune mentioning the actor has also resurfaced, and it’s drawing attention to the relatable way in which Redford liked to dress while enjoying a meal, even in a classy environment.

The article was a review of The Steakhouse, a luxurious eatery located in the midst of Flying Horse Resort & Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. In it, food critic Micah Redfield that he dined at the restaurant after Redford did during a two-month-long stay enjoying the golf course at Flying Horse.
Redfield got some details about Redford from a server, who said that the actor “dined here almost every night, ordering the lobster bisque each time.”
“Often he’d dine in sweats and slippers, book in hand,” the server recalled, adding that his team requested a light to make it easier for the star to read within the restaurant.
The server recalled that some at the restaurant were “astonished” to notice the actor in their presence. He claimed that subset of diners would come up and address the actor, offering “a brief compliment” or more.
“For some time his wife [Sibylle Szaggars] was visiting, too,” Redfield wrote. “She’d stop onlookers and fans with a quick, ‘We’re trying to enjoy our meal. Please leave us alone.’ ”
Redfield’s final rating of The Steakhouse paid tribute to Redford: “Nearly as good as the other four steakhouses in town, but wins for scenic views and Robert Redford’s favorite, the lobster bisque.”

“Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, confirmed of Redford’s death in a statement to PEOPLE. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”
The dad of four left behind his wife, daughters Shauna and Amy and seven grandchildren. His two sons died earlier in life: James died at the age 58 in 2020 after suffering from bile-duct cancer in his liver, and Scott died at 2 months from sudden infant death syndrome in 1959.
His grandchildren took to social media to honor Redford, many of them sharing never-before-seen photos alongside memories and tributes.
“He was larger than life to the world, but to his family, he was simply that … family,” Conor Schlosser, who is the younger child of Redford’s daughter Shauna Redford and her husband Eric Schlosser, wrote alongside a post on Instagram. “Rest in peace, Grandpa.🐎”
Beyond his work on the camera and in the director’s chair, Redford has been heralded for his greater impact on the movie industry via the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organization that is “dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences.”
The organization hosts the annual Sundance Film Festival.
He was also celebrated by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio for his environmental activism and his “commitment to protecting our planet.”
