A 16-year-old boy reportedly died after falling from a freeway overpass while watching an illegal stunt show in California.

At around 3:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, Sept. 13, officers responded to reports of a spectator at a vehicle stunt show, who fell approximately 75 feet from a concrete safety barrier near Interstate 80 by Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, ABC7 News and SFGate reported, citing the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Officers had already been called to the area to investigate the show, which involved more than 100 vehicles, due to the chaotic crowds and vehicles blocking the intersection, per the outlets.

According to a preliminary report from the CHP, per SFGate, a 16-year-old boy “climbed over the on-ramp’s concrete safety barrier and accidentally fell to the ground below, causing fatal injuries.” The unidentified teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The outlets report that footage of the stunt show posted on social media shows speeding cars spinning on the road with smoke coming from their tailpipes. Other clips depict engines roaring with huge crowds and fireworks being set off.

“It woke me up about 3, maybe 3:30 in the morning,” resident Jim Delisle told ABC7 News. “There were fireworks. It’s really common when they get cars going in circles, and everyone gets fired up … I think [the boy] was trying to jump from one side of the on-ramp to the other,” he added of the fatality.

In drone footage shared by San Francisco outlet KTVU, all lanes across Interstate 80 are blocked with traffic, with the chaos of the event spilling onto the freeway.

Local business owner Julia D’Alo told the outlet that these shows have become more frequent in the area, causing “concern” among locals.

“We don’t have a police department. We have sheriffs, and they come in when we call them, but it’s usually too late,” she said. “I feel like it’s coming in off the freeway from Richmond and from Vallejo.”

Local Stephen Nashliving told KTVU, “That is a big concern with having two teenagers of my own and one still in elementary. You think, if they’re out hanging with their friends… they could be influenced.”

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact CHP’s Contra Costa-area office in Martinez at (925) 646-4980 or email 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov.

PEOPLE has reached out to the CHP for comment, but did not immediately hear back. According to multiple outlets, they are still investigating the incident.
