Innocent 17-year-old girl dies weeks after she was shot in face during NYC gang-related shooting: NYPD
A 17-year-old girl died two weeks after she took a bullet to the face in a gang-related shooting at a Bronx basketball tournament that killed a 32-year-old man and injured three others.
Anthonaya Campbell, 17, died Monday, becoming the second fatal victim of the carnage outside Haffen Park on Aug. 23, where she was shot in the face while spectating some late-summer hoops, according to the NYPD.
She died at Jacobi Hospital, where she had been in critical condition since the shooting, according to a heartfelt Facebook post.
“This is a very devastating moment! This young girl[‘s] life mattered and she should be here still with us! Her life was sadly taking [sic] away from us due to another senseless shooting,” the post from friend Boyde Yeremiyah, of Alpha & Omega Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ Inc. reads.
“We are praying for the mother and the rest of her family who is also hurt by this terrible event! This senseless shooting has to stop not only in the Bronx! Not only in our communities, not only in New York, but all over the world.”
Campbell’s mother said her daughter was in the city visiting friends when she was shot.
“She’s a joyful person,” Jennifer Talbot previously told The Post of her daughter. “When you look at her, you just smile. She loves everybody. She greets everybody. She reaches out to everybody. She has an uncontrollable passion for just helping other people.”
Her death is being treated as a murder, according to the NYPD.
The first fatal victim of the gun violence, Jaceil Banks, 32, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Jacobi Hospital immediately after the shooting, cops said.
Three other adults were wounded during the bloodshed, which saw dozens of shots ring out as a summer basketball tournament went on at Haffen Park.
Four people, including two minors, were arrested and face serious charges in connection with the gang-related shooting.
Daeven Reyes, 20; Robert Royal, 25; a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy have each been charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, gang assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
One of the attempted murder counts is expected to be upgraded to another count of murder now that Campbell has succumbed to her injuries.
Meanwhile, mayhem in the Bronx continues, as one man was killed and four others were injured in a drive-by shooting last week.
That shooting was also gang-related, according to sources.
