10 Best Photos from September’s Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse
In case you missed it, the cosmos put on another breathtaking show!
On Sept. 7 at 2:09 p.m. ET, skywatchers were treated to a rare blood moon total lunar eclipse, visible to an estimated 5.8 billion people — across Antarctica, Australia, Asia, the western Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, Europe, the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Africa — per AccuWeather.com.
During this stellar event, Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow across the moon’s surface. This often results in an otherworldly sight such as dramatic shades of red and orange.
This is precisely where the name “blood moon” comes from, as its eerie glow is a result of Earth’s atmosphere bending sunlight and scattering its cooler colors, leaving only the fiery reds in sight.
It is believed, however, that the more dust in the atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the hues on the moon.
According to Space.com, the lunar eclipse ran unusually long with a total of 82 minutes, lasting from 1:30 p.m. to 2:52 p.m. ET.
The next total lunar eclipse will take place on March 2, 2026, marking the third eclipse in a series of three total lunar eclipses in a lunar year. These events come in groups as they are in tandem with solar eclipses.
The total lunar eclipse (and full Corn Moon) will be followed by a partial solar eclipse on Sept. 21, 2025.
