A man unexpectedly learned that he shouldn’t enjoy things in front of a child if they also can’t partake in them.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, a 22-year-old poster on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?” shared a recent situation he allegedly encountered with his 20-year-old girlfriend. While a friend was out of town with their parents, the couple agreed to watch the friend’s 9-year-old little brother.
The poster, or OP, and his girlfriend took the child to a café. When they began to order, OP claims his girlfriend asked for a lemon tea, while the child asked if he could get a coffee.

“I said no,” recalled OP. “His parents once told me he always asks to try coffee, even though they always say no to the request. So he asked for chocolate cake instead.”
The poster ordered the chocolate along with the lemon tea for his girlfriend, and ordered an iced coffee for himself. While the child didn’t think anything of it, the girlfriend told OP that he “shouldn’t have something he isn’t allowed to, right in front of him.”
While a few Redditors understood where the girlfriend was coming from, an overwhelming number of comments deemed OP “NTA” or “Not the A——.”
“He’s 9. He can understand that some things are for adults,” noted one commentator, with another added that their children, ages two and four, understand this as well.
“Did you drive to the cafe? Is the 9 year old allowed to drive? You shouldn’t be allowed to drive if he can’t drive. See how ridiculous that is?” explained another commentator.
“Kid was probably trying to see if this new adult would let him cross the ‘no coffee’ boundary, especially if he didn’t pitch a fit (which he didn’t) after you had the coffee in front of him.”
Multiple comments advised that if he can’t have coffee, then maybe he should be allowed to go into coffee shops, with one person adding the analogy, “You wouldn’t go to a bar and complain that people are drinking beer.”
