Will There Be a ‘The Paper’ Season 2? What We Know So Far About Its Future
NEED TO KNOW
- Season 1 of The Paper premiered on Peacock on Sept. 4
- One day before the pilot episodes were released, the comedy series was renewed for a second season
- The finale episode left the future of two workplace romances up in the air
The Paper isn’t folding just yet.
Peacock’s spinoff of The Office was renewed for its second season one day before it premiered on Sept. 4, Deadline reported. Series stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore announced the news while promoting the mockumentary-style show’s launch on NBC’s Today.
Two decades after a documentary crew began filming the employees of Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, Pa., their cameras turned to a new subject: a struggling Ohio newspaper.
“A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson’s character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn’t have the budget for hiring reporters,” Greg Daniels, who adapted the U.K. version of The Office, told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “They’re completely untrained and don’t know what they’re doing.”
The fictional paper in question is the Toledo Truth Teller, and its new editor-in-chief, Ned Sampson (Gleeson), attempts to revive the dying publication with the help of volunteer reporters. In addition to Gleeson and Impacciatore, who plays managing editor Esmeralda Grand, the series also stars Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Alex Edelman, among others.
Oscar Nuñez also reprised his beloved Office role of accountant Oscar Martinez in season 1, and has been the only cast member from the original NBC series to make a cameo so far.
So, will there be a season 2 of The Paper? Here’s everything to know about the future of The Office spinoff series.

Yes, The Paper has been picked up for a second season. Deadline reported the news in September 2025, one day before the series premiered, and noted that the early renewal would allow the comedy to return for fall 2026.
Some of the show’s stars, including Gregg, celebrated the news on Instagram. “A quick Re-Up before the drop… BLESSED!!!” the actor, who plays reporter and ad sales rep Detrick Moore, wrote in a post. “Congrats to the whole team!!! SEASON 2 ✌🏽.”
How does season 1 of The Paper end?

Despite all the fumbles and mishaps of teaching journalism to a very green staff of (mostly) volunteers, season 1 of The Paper ends on a high note with the Toledo Truth Teller being nominated for three awards.
Though Ned attempts to remind Mare (Frei) and Oscar (both of whom were nominated) that it’s not about winning, he grows more anxious as the award ceremony gets closer. Even more so when Mare arrives with a YouTube star as her date.
The event itself is as chaotic as ever, with business strategist Ken (Tim Key) working overtime to get back into his boss, Marv Putnam’s (Allan Havey) good graces, and Esmeralda going to great lengths to steal back the spotlight. After Mare and Oscar win, she takes the stage to sing a song about “sad, dead journalists.”
But not everything is peachy keen in the newsroom. Nicole (Ramona Young) feels tricked into a monogamous relationship with Detrick after she learns he isn’t seeing anyone else. Put off by her reluctance to commit, he breaks up with her.
The other will-they-won’t-they duo, Ned and Mare, finally decide to explore their obvious feelings for each other in the final episode. They kiss (for research purposes, of course) and Ned’s reaction of “oh, s—” seems to imply that there is more to come for this budding romance in season 2.
Which cast members are returning for season 2?
Troy Harvey/PEACOCK
There’s no word yet on which cast members from season 1 will be returning for new episodes. However, the core cast of Gleeson, Impacciatore, Gregg, Frei, Edelman, Key and Young are expected.
After the season 1 premiere, Gregg told Today.com that though he had hopes for a Nicole-Detrick reunion, his character’s “heart is going to come at a price in season two.” Though Edelman didn’t share his thoughts on his character’s future, he did post behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram from his time filming The Paper ahead of the show’s premiere.
“The most wonderful cast to get to be a part of,” the actor captioned the post. “The most wonderful writing staff to get to be a part of. The most wonderful family to get to be a part of. Sorry to end sentences with prepositions. Toledo Truth Tellers forever.”
