Issa Rae Just Made Camo Jackets Fall’s Must-Have Layer

Among the throngs of A-list celebrities making appearances at the US Open this year, one star in particular caught my attention: Issa Rae. 

The 40-year-old actress and producer not only touts an impressive resume which includes roles in Insecure and Barbie, but also an enviable closet. Most importantly, she’s in possession of the edgy yet approachable layer of the season: the Polo Ralph Lauren Print Cropped Field Jacket. 

Instead of a predictable jean or leather jacket, I’m fixated on a camouflage alternative as it’s neutral enough to throw on over most outfits, but it still acts as an unexpected, eye-catching statement piece. And while I’m incredibly inspired by Rae’s ’fit, it’s not in the cards for me to drop nearly $500 on her exact piece. As such, I took it upon myself to track down more economical options that start as low as $33.

This camouflage jacket from Anthropologie piqued my interest for its muted color scheme and gold snap buttons, not to mention the contrasting, embroidered red-and-pink flowers. Similar to Rae’s, it has large front flap pockets, a wider collar, and sits at hip-length. Buyers recommend sizing down in order to avoid an ultra-oversized look.

VisiChenup Lightweight Camo Jacket

Spending $500 to achieve Rae’s look is not required  — because you can opt for this $40 camouflage laying piece from Amazon. The pattern is darker on this jacket than Rae’s, but it embodies similar design aspects like the lightweight fabric, zipper closure, and front flap pockets. There’s also a hood on the back, which comes in handy during inclement weather. Amazon reviewers agree the jacket is versatile enough to wear with dressy and sporty ensembles. 

Abercrombie & Fitch Cropped Twill Trucker Jacket

Abercrombie & Fitch took a different approach to camouflage than Polo Ralph Lauren. This trucker jacket showcases a paler pattern in a twill fabric with a cropped style. Instead of front flap pockets, like on Rae’s, it has a single, zipper pocket on the breast and two side pockets. My favorite detail of this layering piece is the faux leather collar, which contrasts boldly against the camouflage.
