Mom Cuts Off Mother-in-Law’s Access to Baby Pictures

A woman who will soon adopt two children with her partner says she’s been forced to cut off her mother-in-law’s access to their photos, as she’s already begun posting them to social media.

In a post shared to Reddit, the woman writes: “My partner and I are on the journey to adopt two wonderful children. While they haven’t come into our care yet, we’ve already had discussions about what we will and won’t do as parents.”

“One of the topics we covered was whether or not to share their pictures online,” she writes. “We both have a joint account, as well as personal accounts with decent followings. After some research, we quickly decided not to share their information or photos online. We found more cons than pros in doing so.”

The couple spoke to their families and friends to explain their boundaries and rules, and “everyone agreed to keep things private.”

“We created a shared album where we will only share their pictures with people we know,” she adds. “This week, during our visit with the children, we took a couple of pictures with our youngest child and shared them in the private album. Immediately, my mother-in-law shared the photos on her ‘private’ Facebook account, which has about one thousand ‘friends,’ most of whom she doesn’t even know.”

She continues: “We had a conversation with her, explaining that until she can prove she won’t share our children’s pictures online, she will not have access to the album. Since then, she has turned most of my partner’s family against me, claiming that I overreacted by cutting off her access after the first ‘mistake.’ ”

While the woman writes that her partner agrees with her, she adds that she is now “feeling pressure from other family members who believe I’m overdoing it.”

“My brother-in-law even suggested that our rules might be more lax when we have more children, but right now we’re acting like many first-time parents do,” she writes. “Did I overreact? Did I do too much?”

Others on Reddit say the woman didn’t go too far at all. Even one grandmother chimed in, writing, “I have 3 young grandchildren. Love them all beyond measure. Their parents said no pics on social media. Guess what I’ve done? I have put NO pics of ANY of them, EVER, on social media. It isn’t hard.”
