Rachel Cruze has only rarely tapped her dad Dave Ramsey’s fame to help her out, and she can attest to the ways his reputation holds sway.
During a recent episode of her Smart Money Happy Hour podcast, Cruze’s co-host George Kamel asked if she ever name-dropped her radio host father, and she copped to one very apt — and ultimately successful — use of her relation to the professional finance guru.
Cruze recalled a time during college when she was “failing” her Economics 101 class. She admitted her D grade came as a result of her poor attendance, which led to unfortunate midterm results that tanked her overall score.
“He had office hours you could go to, and I was like, I have to find a way in to Ken Baker’s heart. I’ll never forget him … Professor Ken Baker,” Cruze reminisced on the podcast. “And I totally, in the session with other students, I figured out a way to drop Dave’s name. And he was like, ‘Wait, what?'”
She then observed that her grade got higher from there, and Cruze finished the class with a B. She noted to Kamel that her final exam score was better than her midterm, but she also knew that the professor gave out “extra credit,” and Ramsey’s prominence might have assisted in that area of her improvement.
Cruze is one of Ramsey’s three children, whom he shares with his wife, Sharon. She has one older sister, Denise, and a younger brother, Daniel. All three of them work for their father today, with Denise heading their Ramsey Family Foundation and Daniel as the acting president of their financial services firm, Ramsey Solutions, per the company’s leadership webpage.
Cruze and Kamel’s podcast falls under the family’s media brand, the Ramsey Network.
