It’s been 30 years since Xena: Warrior Princess took the world by storm.
The hit fantasy television show, which premiered on Sept. 4, 1995, starred Lucy Lawless as Xena, a warrior princess looking to redeem herself for her past sins. Xena is joined by her ally and best friend, Gabrielle, played by Renée O’Connor, who helps Xena fight her evil past while transitioning from a small-town girl to a warrior.
As the series played out, Xena and Gabrielle completed various missions and fought off several enemies to persevere for the greater good. The dynamic duo was also joined by Joxer “the Mighty” (Ted Raimi), who tried his best to help them at all costs. In addition, the show starred the late Kevin Smith as Ares, the Greek God of War.
While Lawless, O’Connor, Raimi and Smith were part of all six seasons, Xena: Warrior Princess also featured recurring guest stars before it ran its last episode in June 2001. The cast was rounded out by Hudson Leick as Callisto, Karl Urban as Julius Caesar, Alexandra Tydings as Aphrodite, Adrienne Wilkinson as Eve and Marton Csokas as Borias.

Lucy Lawless got her big break when she first appeared as Xena in the first season of Hercules. Her character gained such a strong following that her own spinoff series was created and called Xena: Warrior Princess.
In the 30 years since making a name for herself, Lawless has continued acting in several television shows and films. Her next major role was D’Anna Biers in the hit show Battlestar Galactica and later as Lucretia in the Spartacus series.
Lawless also had recurring roles in Parks and Recreation, Salem, Ash vs Evil Dead and My Life Is Murder. In addition to her TV roles, Lawless acted in the films Spider-Man, EuroTrip, Bedtime Stories, The Changeover and Pike River.
While Xena: Warrior Princess helped launch her professional life, the series also helped her love life, as she married the show’s creator and executive producer, Robert Tapert, in 1998. The couple share two children, sons Julius and Judah, as well as a daughter, Daisy, from her first marriage to Garth Lawless.

Although Renée O’Connor had acted in a few shows and TV movies as a teenager, she rose to prominence when she played Gabrielle in Xena: Warrior Princess. After the series came to an end in 2001, O’Connor founded her production company, Roc Productions.
In addition to helping launch other films, she acted in Boogeyman 2, Beyond the Farthest Star and A Question of Faith. In 2021, O’Connor reunited with Lawless on season 2 of her TV show, My Life Is Murder.
“it was even better than I expected,” O’Connor said of acting together to Entertainment Weekly in 2021. “Because these characters were so different from Xena and Gabrielle so there was more to play with in current affairs and relationships.”
She has been married to Jed Sura since 2017, and the couple share one daughter, Iris Sura O’Connor. She is also mom to son Miles Muir, from her first marriage to Steve Muir. Like his mom, Miles has pursued acting and even worked alongside her.
