Inside the Life of the Dog Who Calls One of the World’s Largest Cruise Ships Home (Exclusive)
Sailor, the golden retriever, was destined for a life at sea, just based on her name alone.
The 6-month-old dog was recently named the Chief Dog Officer of the Star of Seas, the newest addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet and one of the largest cruise ships in the world. Along with Sailor, the sprawling vessel includes Royal Caribbean’s fastest and tallest waterslides, seven pools, and a dozen entertainment and food options.
As the ship’s Chief Dog Officer — a role held by a canine named Rover on the Star‘s sister ship, Icon of the Seas — Sailor’s goal is to spread happiness among the ship’s crew and guests alongside her handler.
Rover helped Sailor get comfortable with cruise life, as documented in Royal Caribbean’s Sailor sneak peek video.
“When guests go on vacation, one of the key things that they miss is their pets back home. And when our crew is out sailing onboard for their contracts, one of the things they miss is their pets back at home,” Jay Rosser, a senior manager in product development for Royal Caribbean, says in the clip about the “fluffy addition” of the Chief Dog Officer role.
Rosser adds that Royal Caribbean partnered with numerous animal wellness experts while creating the Chief Dog Officer program to ensure that Rover and Sailor enjoy their time aboard the ship, too, and get everything they need to be happy, healthy dogs. Sailor went through several months of obedience and socialization training before boarding the Star of Seas, so she arrived with the skills she needed to enjoy her life aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Sailor started her sea-faring career in August, joining the Star of the Seas on its maiden voyage out of Port Canaveral, Florida. Helping the canine crush her first voyage on the ship was Sailor’s chief of staff, Vicky Keeley Smith.
“Working with Sailor is a dream job. Whether we are greeting guests, visiting crew, or exploring her new home on Star, she has such a sweet disposition and brings so much joy to everyone she meets,” Smith says of her role on the dog’s team.
Smith also revealed to PEOPLE some of the unique specifics of Sailor’s life on the Star of the Seas, including a very special bed.
“She has her own bed on the bridge where she enjoys many naps with a beautiful ocean view,” Smith shares.

When Sailor isn’t taken in views from the bridge, she is staying with Smith, who helps the dog keep to a routine that keeps the canine active, engaged, and content.
“Sailor’s life on board is a blend of structured routine and spontaneous adventure. Sailor’s day starts with a peaceful morning walk on the crew deck, followed by breakfast and a bit of play and training time. After her morning routine, we explore the ship together, often visiting our kids’ club, Adventure Ocean, or taking a walk along the Royal Promenade. We always prioritize her needs first and foremost to ensure she enjoys plenty of downtime in between adventures,” the chief of staff says.
And while Sailor’s job has begun, she isn’t through learning new things. Smith is continuing the adolescent pup’s training so that Sailor can get even more familiar with the sights and sounds of cruise life.

“This age is typically when dogs start showing more independence, so for Sailor’s life at sea, my priority over the next several months is to make sure she feels comfortable in the different environments on board and to reinforce her training,” Smith says, adding that collaboarting with the golden retriever has been easy since she is a “friendly, playful and curious” pup.
Smith adds that Sailor is acing her role so far, bringing smiles to all she encounters onboard, just like her job description asks.

“Sailor captures hearts quickly! People are excited to have a cuddle and take a photo with her. Often, vacationers will share personal stories about their own pets and how meeting Sailor is a highlight of their day. She brings smiles to everyone she meets,” she says, adding that Sailor already has numerous “best friends” among the Star of the Seas crew and cruisers.
