These days, she’s a well-respected anchor on the Today show. But back in high school, Savannah Guthrie wasn’t a particularly impressive student.

The 53-year-old journalist discussed her drastically different reputation as a teen attending Amphitheater High School in Tucson, Ariz., on Wednesday, Sept. 3, while co-hosting Today with Jenna & Friends alongside colleague Willie Geist

“I was shocked to learn just this morning in our meeting that you, Savannah Guthrie, the brilliant Savannah Guthrie — one of our great broadcasters, top of her class in law school, all of the things, were a terrible high school student,” Geist, 50, shared of Guthrie, 53.

“I was a terrible high school student,” Guthrie agreed. “I was a high school slacker, and people don’t believe it. Recently I found some old report cards and here it is.”

Guthrie posted a photo of her 10th-grade report card, which featured a series of lower grades, including many Cs and even a D. Additionally, she showed lots of absences from class, including several classes where she was absent for more than 10 classes.

And a low grade in one particular class caught the NBC anchor’s attention.

“C- in tennis! Oh my god, I just noticed that,” Guthrie said, laughing. “By the way, why was tennis a class?”

“And how do you get a C- in tennis?” Geist asked her, cracking up.

“You’ve played with me. You know exactly how I get a C- in tennis,” Guthrie quipped.

The mother of two shared that she also sent the report card findings to her own mom, questioning her about her part in Guthrie’s academic shortcomings.

“I did have a period of time when I was really blowing off. I never went to school,” Guthrie said. “I had excessive absences. Anyway, I sent this old report card, I found it in this box. I sent it to my mom. And my mom laughed and she went, ‘Excessive absences? Where were the parents?’ I’m like, ‘I know, Mom, where were y’all?’”

When Geist noted that seeing those grades “does not line up with the person I know,” Guthrie added, “It’s never too late to turn it around and turn a new leaf.”

After Guthrie graduated from high school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts, graduating cum laude from the University of Arizona. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center and received the highest score on the Arizona Bar Exam when she took it, The Washingtonian reported.
