A house fire that broke out in Iowa early in the morning left three teenagers dead and one in critical condition, according to authorities.

At 5 a.m. local time on Monday, Sept. 1, firefighters from the Granville Fire Department responded to a call at 430th Street, about two miles northwest of Granville, local NBC affiliates KTIV and WOWT reported.

When they arrived, the home was “filled with heavy smoke,” according to a press release from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

Inside the home, firefighters found four people in critical condition, all of whom were transported to the hospital. One victim — identified as Kolten Hofmeyer, 16 — died from their injuries after being transported to Orange City Area Health.

The other three victims were taken to “specialty units at other hospitals for further treatment,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Bryleigh Koob, 16, and Ashton Koob, 17, both died of their injuries at the hospital. One victim, identified by the sheriff only as a 16-year-old male, remains in critical condition at a Minnesota hospital, where he is being treated at the facility’s burn unit.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation in a joint effort by the Granville Fire Chief and the Iowa State Fire Marshal.

Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst released a statement after the fire calling for the community to unite, according to KTIV.

“We are created for community—for relationships that strengthen and sustain us. I’ve come to you before, Sioux County, to ask that you rally around a hurting and broken family, school, and community and we are in dire need again,” Van Voorst said.

“In this sad tragedy, there are several families involved and a large community affected. This is heavy, heartbreaking and overwhelming,” the sheriff added. “Please stop and pray with us for everyone affected by this. Please continue to pray in the upcoming weeks.”
