Matlock fans are getting their first look at the highly anticipated season 2.
CBS dropped a teaser for the second season of the Kathy Bates-led series on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and it didn’t disappoint with the drama.
“It’s hard to separate truth from fiction entirely, because most of what you know about me is based in truth — but it’s also a lie,” Bates’ Madeline “Matty” Matlock says in a voiceover as she passes a worried Julian (Jason Ritter) in the hallways of Jacobson Moore.

Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) is then heard telling someone, most likely Matty or Julian, “If you really want to win this fight, you’re going to have to stop playing games.”
The teaser comes to an emotional head as Matty threatens a rattled Olympia by telling her, “I could burn this courthouse to the ground and still have ’em eating butterscotch out of my hand.”
Olympia is also seen frantically looking for something — most likely the Wellbrexa documents linking Julian to some underhanded dealings that Matty is after. Other scenes show Olympia pulling Julian into a stairwell to tell him something important and searching Julian’s safety deposit box, only to find it empty.

The season 2 premiere episode is titled “The Before Times.”
According to a synopsis from CBS, the episode will follow Matty as she “questions the paternity of the man claiming to be Alfie’s (Aaron Harris) father.”
In the season 1 finale, a mysterious man showed up at Matty and Edwin’s (Sam Anderson) house, identifying himself as the estranged father of their beloved genius grandson.
Elsewhere in the episode, Olympia and her team — which also consists of Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis) — take on an arson case.
Regarding the Wellbrexa scandal, Olympia “tries to protect Julian’s involvement,” which is likely why we see Matty, whose late daughter Ellie died of an overdose from the opioid, so fired up in the teaser.

The Matlock cast is growing for season 2.
Deadline reported in August that Justina Machado was joining the cast for the second season in a major recurring role.
Machado will play Eva, described as “a formidable, smart, and ambitious attorney” who runs Jacobson Moore’s Miami office and is the reason why Howard “Senior” Markston (Beau Bridges) decided to “swear off marriage.” Eva is Senior’s fourth ex-wife.
This is the second Jane the Virgin reunion for Matlock creator Jennie Snyder Urman, who already brought Yael Grobglas over to the legal drama.
Urman previously told PEOPLE she wanted the actress who played the titular role on Jane the Virgin to stop by Matlock for some fun.
“Oh my God, I want them all, but I really want of course Gina [Rodriguez],” Urman said, adding that she “would love them all” and is “dreaming about it.”
