FX‘s Alien: Earth is a thrilling, chilling delight. The new series from creator Noah Hawley imagines what would happen if one of the iconic Weyland-Yutani deep space research vessels from the Alien franchise somehow found itself crashing on earth. Not only does this mean the iconic Xenomorphs are on the loose, terrorizing humanity, but four other completely new species created for the FX show.

In just the first few episodes of Alien: Earth, we’ve encountered blood-sucking ticks, the endlessly creepy eye midge, and a new wrinkle in humanity’s own evolution.

Alien: Earth is as much a story about the terror of facing down the unknown as it is one about confronting our own mortality. We learn in the Alien: Earth premiere that child prodigy-turned-corporate overlord Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin) has figured out how to transfer a human consciousness into an immortal synthetic form. The only hiccup? So far, the process only works on children’s brains, as they are more elastic. So Boy Kavalier has a sextet of “hybrids” at his beck and call, all renamed after their transition to honor various characters in their maker’s favorite book, J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.

When we last left Alien: Earth, Wendy (Sydney Chandler) had successfully slayed the “crocodile,” aka a full grown Xenomorph, while Boy Kavalier had managed to round up all five alien critters into his own private menagerie. Loyal Weyland-Yutani lieutenant Morrow (Babou Ceesay) was plotting ways to get the samples back for his company, while the rest of the “Lost Boys” were having a range of responses to their recent adventures hunting the aliens.
