Aaron Rodgers isn’t buying into Jets-Steelers hype before his Week 1 return

Aaron Rodgers isn’t getting caught up in the hype around facing his former team, the Jets, in Week 1.

While Rodgers and the Steelers will surely have plenty of attention on them as the future Hall of Famer battles the team that many thought he would lead to a Super Bowl, the 41-year-old told Adam Shein in an interview on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio that the game would “probably [be] nowhere near where it might be made out.”

“A lot has changed over there, coaching staff-wise, player-wise. Obviously I have friendships over there, but it’s one game out of 17 and at five o’clock eastern on that Sunday it’s only going to be on to the next game. So that’s just the way it is,” Rodgers said.

The interview with Rodgers is set to air on the SiriusXM station on Tuesday morning.

The Steelers will face the Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 7 and will mark the first time Rodgers returns to New Jersey after two years with the Jets, which fell well short of expectations.

A season-ending Achilles injury just four plays into the 2023 season derailed his first year with Gang Green and the 2024 campaign ended with the 5-12 record and Jets’ 14th consecutive season without a playoff appearance.

When asked for his message to Jets fans ahead of his return to the Meadowlands, Rodgers indicated he wanted to get across how much his time there meant to him.

“I really embraced my time there and put as much as myself into it as I possibly could,” he said. And I really wanted to win there, I really did. And I have a lot of appreciation for the special moments. There weren’t a ton of them, but one of the coolest moments, unfortunately four plays later was all taken away, but running out on that field, it was a special night. … I put a lot into it and I’m sorry it didn’t work out, but I’m thankful for the couple special moments that were had.”
