‘The Pitt’ Star Shawn Hatosy Tells ‘TODAY’ He Blew Off An Audition For ‘Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman: “Things Happen The Way They Happen”
Oh, what could have been!
During a Friday morning appearance on TODAY, The Pitt star Shawn Hatosy recalled a role that he wished he auditioned for when he had the chance.
“It’s funny,” he shared. “Like 2008 or so, I was very focused on film, and at the time I was writing something. My manager sent me a script and really wanted me to go in.”
Hatosy said he “kept blowing it off,” explaining that “it was for television at the time” and “television hadn’t really changed yet the way that it has.”
“I just didn’t do it, and that was Breaking Bad,” he revealed, adding that the audition would have been for Aaron Paul‘s chatacter, Jesse Pinkman. “AMC, they weren’t even making television at the time. It just didn’t seem like a risk I should take. No, it was just an audition. I didn’t get offered it or anything like that. But I should have [auditioned].”
TODAY‘s Dylan Dreyer attempted to soften the blow, telling Hatosy that “it’s such a dark show” and that “it’s a lot to shake off” after working on it. However, Hatosy noted that he did star on Animal Kingdom, “which was also quite dark.”
Craig Melvin added, “But you know what? It turned out pretty well for you. It turned out ok. “
Hatosy replied, “Things happen the way they happen. But that one, I would definitely love a do-over.”
Paul won three Emmys for his critically-acclaimed as Jesse Pinkman alongside Bryan Cranston‘s Walter White on Breaking Bad, which ran for five seasons. He reprised the role in 2019’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie and in two episodes of the Breaking Bad prequel series, Better Call Saul.
Hatosy’s role on The Pitt recently earned him an Emmy nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. The Pitt also swept this year’s Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards, winning four awards. Earlier this week, HBO Max dropped the trailer for The Pitt‘s sophomore season, which debuts in January. Deadline broke the news that Hatosy, who plays Dr. Jack Abbot on the hit medical drama, will also direct Episode 9 of Season 2.
