Dakota Johnson gives insight into ‘weird’ friendship with Madonna
Dakota Johnson revealed she and Madonna have a “weird” friendship that goes back nearly three decades.
“I really love her,” the “Splitsville” star told E! News on Tuesday.
“We’ve been, like, weird friends for a while. I met her when I was really young, because she did a movie with my stepfather [Antonio Banderas],” she said, referring to when the actor co-starred with the pop icon in the 1996 film “Evita.”
“Then I got to know her later because we were gonna work together on something,” Johnson, 35, added.
Despite the project falling through the cracks, she and Madonna, 67, have maintained their bond throughout the years.
“We’ve always kind of circled each other,” the “Materialists” star added. “She is like an energy to be near that is so beautiful and so wild. It’s just cool that she even wants to talk to me.”
While the duo is rarely seen together, they were photographed at a mutual friend’s birthday party in July.
Madonna, meanwhile, once candidly shared that she had a crush on Banderas, 65, in her 1991 documentary, “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” and featured him in the project.
Reflecting on Madonna’s infatuation in an interview on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show” in December 2019, the “Desperado” star admitted he was unaware of the hitmaker’s feelings toward him.
He recalled the “Material Girl” singer calling him one morning after he had finished filming the 1992 film “The Mambo Kings” in Los Angeles.
“I thought someone was just making a joke at me,” Banderas said. “Because I picked up my phone in my hotel room and it was Madonna. I couldn’t believe it.”
“She said, ‘Listen, I want to show you this documentary that you are in,’” he shared. “And I said, ‘What? What documentary? What are you talking about?’”
Madonna gave the “Mask of Zorro” actor the option to be removed from the documentary, but he declined the offer.
At the time, Banderas was married to his first ex-wife, Ana Leza, whom he was wed to from 1987 to 1996.
He then went on to marry Johnson’s mom, Melanie Griffith, 68, in 1996, and the exes welcomed their daughter, Stella, now 28, before going their separate ways in 2015 when their divorce was finalized.
Madonna later got candid about her feelings toward Banderas, blaming bad timing for the reason why they never hooked up.
“I had a big crush on him [but] he was with Melanie Griffith. She never left his side,” she said during an interview with Howard Stern in 2015.
The “Vogue” singer was previously wed to Sean Penn from 1985 to 1989 and Guy Ritchie from 2000 to 2008. She’s currently dating her much-younger boyfriend, Akeem Morris.
