Nationals release former Silver Slugger Nathaniel Lowe
The Nationals are getting ready to cut ties with one of their offseason acquisitions.
Washington has requested unconditional release waivers on first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, days after it designated him for assignment.
“We have young players, and I think we want to see them play,” interim manager Miguel Cairo said earlier this week after the team DFA’d Lowe to make room for the return of Dylan Crews.

“We want to see what they can do in the last month, month and a half.”
Lowe, who has won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger in his career, has not measured up to what the Nationals were expecting this season.
After coming over in a December trade with the Rangers, Lowe hit .216/.292/.373 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs over 119 games.
He struck out 130 times in 440 at-bats and held just an 86 weighted runs created plus and a minus-0.8 WAR, according to Fangraphs.
He didn’t provide much defense either, ranking in the eighth percentile in outs above average, per MLB’s Statcast.
It was a steep drop-off for the 30-year-old, who had produced four straight full seasons of above league-average play — including a 27-homer campaign in 2022 with Texas that earned him the Silver Slugger at first base.

Despite some young and up-and-coming talent in their lineup, the Nationals rank 23rd in OPS as they sit in the National League East basement — 21 games behind the first-place Phillies — with a 49-73 record.
