Takeaways from Jets’ joint practice with Giants as Gang Green gets major injury news

The Jets hosted the first of two joint practices with the Giants this week in Florham Park on Tuesday. Here are five things Jets fans should know coming out of the practice:

1. The biggest news of the day out of the Jets was that backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery and won’t play for the rest of the preseason. Jets coach Aaron Glenn said that they are hopeful Taylor can return by Week 1 on Sept. 7 against the Steelers.

The good news for the Jets is that Taylor does not really need the reps in camp or the preseason as he enters his 15th season in the NFL. But this is a concern since Taylor is the only backup quarterback with any experience on the team. The other quarterbacks behind Justin Fields are Adrian Martinez and rookie Brady Cook and neither of them have taken a snap in the NFL. Cook left Tuesday’s practice after he was stepped on but Glenn said it was not serious.

Taylor has struggled with injuries in his career. The Jets need to have a reliable backup behind Fields so this is a situation that bears watching.
