‘Eddington’ Comes to Digital, But When Will Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’ Movie Be Streaming on HBO Max?
Do you want to relive the 2020 lockdown? No? Well, too bad, because you’re gonna—if you watch the new Ari Aster movie, Eddington, which is coming to digital platforms to buy tomorrow.
Aster is best known as a horror director for his films like Hereditary and Midsommar, but he’s recently moved away from the horror genre, like with 2023’s Beau Is Afraid, and now Eddington, which was billed as a “Neo-Western satirical black comedy film.” Joaquin Phoenix stars as the sheriff in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, who runs for mayor against the town’s current mayor, played by Pedro Pascal. Strict COVID protocols and incendiary politics lead to an explosive town-wide standoff, with everyone picking sides. The Eddington cast also includes, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.
Eddington received mixed reviews from critics, and has so far only earned $10.5 million at the worldwide box office. Perhaps more people will watch the movie now that Eddington is available to watch at home. But before you drop $25, you should know that we do expect to see Eddington streaming on HBO Max, free to subscribers, before the end of the year.
Where to watch the Eddington movie on streaming:
Beginning on Tuesday, August 12 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, August 11) you will be able to buy a digital copy of Eddington on platforms like Amazon Prime, Fandango At Home, Apple TV, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Amazon, the film cost $24.99 to pre-order a digital copy. Eddington will not yet be available to rent online.
Eddington is not currently available to stream on any subscription-based services, but the film will eventually be coming to streaming, on HBO Max, thanks to the 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, which brings A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the streaming service HBO Max.
If you’re new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $9.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription will cost $16.99/month.
If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $16.99/month and without ads, $29.99/month.
When will the Eddington movie be streaming on HBO Max?
The Eddington movie streaming release date on HBO Max has not yet been announced, but we can make an educated guess as to when you can expect to see Eddington on HBO Max.
The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on HBO Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that HBO Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights to Eddington, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, Death of a Unicorn, began streaming on HBO Max on July 25, about four months after its release in theaters, and about three months after its release on digital.
If Eddington follows a similar release strategy, you might see Eddington streaming on HBO Max in about four months, around mid-November 2025.
This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch Eddington right away, you can buy a digital copy starting tomorrow.
