Tyrese Haliburton booed at MetLife Stadium for WWE SummerSlam
New York and New Jersey wrestling fans seemed ready to lay the smackdown on Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, and the Pacers star was more than happy to play the heel during SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Haliburton, a noted wrestling aficionado, was in the building for the second night of the WWE event taking place in the Meadowlands, even though he’s recovering from surgery that repaired a torn Achilles tendon.
He has become a villain in the eyes of many New York sports fans due to the rivalry between the Knicks and Indiana, and he was greeted with that energy when he was shown on the video board inside MetLife Stadium.
And he gleefully lapped it up.
Haliburton rubbed his hands together and flashed a wide grin before the boos started, which he encouraged.
He waved his arms in a motion to encourage louder boos and could he heard saying, “I love you too” as WWE broadcaster Michael Cole was explaining Haliburton’s appearance at SummerSlam.
“Yes, Yes!” he continued.
It wasn’t the only time he was booed on Sunday.
A separate video showed Haliburton prior to the start of the event walking on the stadium floor toward his seat in a walking boot.
Boos could be heard during that moment as well.
Haliburton even got involved in the action later on during SummerSlam when Cody Rhodes and John Cena were duking it out for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Cena did his “you can’t see me” gesture toward Haliburton, who was sitting front row, and then took one of his crutches to use to attack Rhodes.
Haliburton was one of the top players in the NBA and had helped the Pacers topple the Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals earlier this year.
He solidified his spot as one of the most hated sports figures among area fans after he hit a game-tying shot in Game 1 and proceeded to mimic Reggie Miller’s infamous choking gesture.
The celebration was a bit premature since he thought he had hit a game-winning 3-pointer, but instead the play was ruled a two-point basket at the buzzer.
Giants quarterback Russell Wilson was also in attendance at SummerSlam and booed Sunday.
